The Australian Society of Dermal Clinicians (ASDC) was founded in 2000-2001 with the first graduates of the Bachelor of Health Science (Clinical Dermal Therapies) from Victoria University.

 

The field of Dermal Therapies in 2000 was a progression from the skin therapy industry and was predominantly based in Melbourne, Victoria.  The medical and health sector encouraged the development of a formal university qualification in the area of dermal science to manage the risks and complications associated with providing advanced non-surgical cosmetic treatments.

 

The ASDC was founded to provide these new health professionals with a professional body and network.  

 

The Dermal Therapy industry has experienced dramatic growth since 2000, with the increasing popularity of non-surgical cosmetic treatments and clinics offering dermal therapy procedures across Australia.  This growth has also increased the demand for Dermal Clinicians practicing Australia wide.  

 

This continuing growth has also highlighted the need for the ASDC to advocate for Dermal Clinicians nationally to maintain standards, integrity and education within the industry and promote evidence based practice.

 

The rapid growth of the industry and increase in scope of treatments provided by Dermal Clinicians has lead to an expansion in the number of programs offered nationally.  Over the last 21 years there has also been a significant increase in the rigour of the requirements of evidence for practice.

 

Dermal Clinicians are educated with expertise in the domains of skin health and management.  We provide education and therapies to assist with managing common dermatological disorders and skin problems associated with other conditions that can effect skin health.  

 

You will now find Dermal Clinicians in a range of settings including: private practice, outpatient and hospital settings, multidisciplinary clinics and primary health care providers.

Dermal Clinicians are now able to study their degree at several different tertiary institutions around Australia that have been recognised for membership with the Australian Society of Dermal Clinicians.  You can find more information on this in the education section.
